The Canadian GP Flashpoint: Norris vs Piastri

The 2025 Canadian Grand Prix turned into more than just another race weekend for McLaren — it became the epicentre of rising intra-team tension. With both cars on track for solid points finishes, Lando Norris attempted an overly ambitious move on teammate Oscar Piastri into Turn 8. The result? Contact, damage, and a swirl of controversy that continues to shadow the team.

Norris admitted fault post-race, telling media he would “take it on the chin” and accept the consequences. “I messed up,” he stated bluntly to Sky Sports, while also later clarifying that he thought Piastri would leave more room. The incident forced Piastri wide and compromised what should have been a clean double-points haul for the team.

A Misjudgment, or Something Deeper?

Former driver and analyst Jolyon Palmer was frank in his assessment. Writing for Formula1.com, he called the move “a major misjudgment” by Norris, suggesting it reflected poor decision-making in a moment that didn’t demand such risk. He noted that while the contact was light, the intent behind the move showed unnecessary aggression

.

Toto Wolff, observing from the outside, likened the dynamic to the Russell–Hamilton scenario at Mercedes. He called the situation “tricky,” noting that when two top-tier drivers fight for team supremacy, the margin for harmony shrinks. McLaren, he implied, now faces the same pressure to keep both sides satisfied — and in check.

What’s Fueling the Fire?

Beyond the human element, there's a technical side to consider. This week’s Tech Weekly on F1.com highlighted how McLaren’s unique aerodynamic platform — especially around the floor and diffuser setup — may be contributing to sensitivity under braking and tight cornering. In other words, their car may not be as forgiving in side-by-side scenarios, making intra-team battles even riskier.

And it’s happening in the context of a tightly fought Constructors' Championship, where every point matters and both drivers are consistently finishing in the top 6.

Piastri: The Calm in the Storm

As we called out in a previous article here, Piastri has remained composed. The Melbourne native hasn't inflamed the situation, instead opting to let the incident speak for itself. His demeanour stands in contrast to Norris' more emotional reaction, reinforcing the image of Piastri as a composed future WDC.

Internally, McLaren now faces a pivotal few races. Team orders may become more explicit, and tensions could escalate if future clashes arise. The Norris–Piastri partnership, once seen as a model of balance, may now evolve into a season-defining narrative.

Final Thoughts

We've seen similar intra-team rivalries in the past (Mercedes 2016 immediately comes to mind), and whilst we're not there yet with McLaren, teammate collisions are never ideal.

For fans, it adds another layer of drama.

For the team, it’s a strategic and emotional challenge they must manage delicately.

Keep watching this space - the battle within McLaren might just shape how 2025 plays out.
